Overseas container<\/strong>, ship container, ocean container, shipping container, ISO container \u2013 these terms almost always mean the same thing: the standardised steel container for international freight, which can be used for storage, as a conversion base or as a transport unit. This page explains the terms and shows what matters when buying.<\/p>\n

Overseas container, ship container, shipping container \u2013 what is the difference?<\/h2>\n

In trade and in everyday language, these terms are used interchangeably:<\/p>\n

Ocean container<\/td>\nhighlights seaworthiness (watertight, with a valid CSC plate).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Shipping container<\/td>\nthe most common umbrella term.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
ISO container<\/td>\nthe technically correct designation: standardised under ISO 668 (dimensions) and ISO 6346 (marking).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

Sizes and designs<\/h2>\n

The most common overseas containers are 20 ft<\/strong> (approx. 6,06 m) and 40 ft<\/strong> (approx. 12,19 m), each as Standard or as High Cube<\/strong> with 30 cm more interior height.
