The eight corner castings of a container are standardised according to ISO 1161 and transmit all forces: they carry the container when stacked, absorb the crane load during handling and serve as locking points for twistlocks and lashing chains.
When setting up a container, it is important that the entire load rests on these four lower corner castings as a point load. The ground must be load-bearing exactly there – concrete slabs or timber blocks under the corners solve the problem on soft ground. A container must never rest on its frame (side rails or cross members), only on the corner castings.
