FCL (Full Container Load) means: A shipper books a complete container, regardless of whether it is fully used. The container is packed at the shipper's premises, sealed and only opened again at the consignee's premises – fast, secure, predictable.
LCL (Less than Container Load) is groupage cargo: Several shippers share one container; the goods are consolidated at a container freight station (CFS) terminal and separated again at the destination. LCL is cheaper for small quantities, but takes longer and involves additional transshipment and handling costs.
For a straightforward containerpurchase the term is only indirectly relevant – it explains why a "one-way container" has already made a sea voyage with cargo. For transporting your own goods in a container, we provide advice as part of Container transport and logistics.
