The dew point is the temperature at which moist air can no longer hold its moisture and condenses on cold surfaces. In an uninsulated steel container, the ceiling cools considerably at night; the moisture in the interior air condenses there and drips down – the so-called “container rain” or “container sweat”.
Countermeasures: ventilation (vent grilles for cross ventilation), desiccants (absorber bags, granules) for short-term storage, and for permanent use insulation with a vapour barrier, which separates the cold steel surface from the warm interior. Damp goods (fresh wood, soil, plants) aggravate the problem and should not be stored untreated.
Details: Avoiding condensation in containers.
