8, 10 or 20 ft – which one fits?
- 8 ft: tools, machinery, garden equipment, bicycles – when floor space is tight or the container needs to stay transportable.
- 10 ft: the slightly larger alternative with a similarly compact footprint.
- 20 ft: the best value per cubic metre – if there is enough space, almost always the more economical choice. Overview: Buy a 20 ft container.
Rule of thumb: first estimate the space your contents need, then check the available footprint – and if in doubt, choose one size larger, because upgrading later costs more than buying the right size once.
Condition and availability
8 ft containers are mostly available as used (wind and watertight) or as a conversion base; brand-new and one-way models are rare in this size. Availability fluctuates more than for 20 and 40 ft – enquire early so we can reserve a suitable unit. Condition grades explained: buy used shipping containers.
What to look for in a used 8 ft container
Above all, check the floor and door seals: Small containers often have an eventful past as tool or site containers and are more heavily worn than a shipping container that has spent most of its life stacked. Doors that close cleanly and a dry, solid floor matter more than flawless paint.
How much does an 8 ft container cost?
A used 8 ft container costs in the low four-figure range, plus transport. Because few units are available on the market, the price per cubic metre is higher than for a 20 ft container. All cost factors: How much does a shipping container cost.
Delivery and placement area
Delivery is by truck with a loader crane (precise offloading) or on a small tilt chassis. The ground must be load-bearing and level – compacted gravel, concrete slabs or asphalt; the load acts as a point load under the four corner castings. Details: Have a shipping container delivered and offloaded.
The 8 ft container as a conversion base
Precisely because it is small and transportable, the 8 ft container is well suited as a base for a conversion: Sales and drinks stand, kiosk, ticket or info point, technical and pump room, lockable equipment room for a club. Its advantage over larger sizes is that it can be moved with comparatively small equipment and fits on almost any site, so you stay flexible if you want to change location. Bear in mind the limited headroom: after interior insulation, about two metres remain, which is tight for rooms where people spend time. Buying or renting?
For short-term use – for example during a construction project – renting is more flexible: Rent material containers. If you need it for about a year or longer, buying pays off.
